What a shame...

Well, it looks like we can forget about Magg$ playing OF for the Cubs next season. Mike Kiley is reporting that the Cubs will not pursue Magg$ unless Sosa is shipped:

As for free-agent outfielder Magglio Ordonez, the Cubs will consider him only if Sosa is traded and they don't get an outfielder in exchange. They haven't even investigated Ordonez's physical status with his troublesome knee. That will only happen if the time comes that Sosa is gone and Ordonez makes sense. For now, Hendry is happy with a left-field combo of Todd Hollandsworth and Jason Dubois.

Folks, an OF of Hollandsworth/Dubois, Patterson, and Sosa is another recipe for an anemic offense and more frustrating 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 type losses. Is the Hollandsworth/Dubois platoon going to put up 100+ RBI's, runs, and 39 HR's to replace Alou's contributions of last year? I think not. Added to this bit of somber speculation is the fact that the offense of last year needed to be upgraded! The Cubs don't need to just get back to where they were with Alou - this offense was downright stingy last year and unless some additions are made, we're most likely in for more of the same this year.

Hendry should not be thinking either Sosa or Magg$ - but both Sosa and Magg$. What a disappointment.
